I was born in Lisbon – Portugal – in 1976 and have held a medical degree since 2000 by the Faculty of Medical Sciences – New University of Lisbon. I am also a specialist in Gastroenterology since 2008.
Until 2013 I have worked in the hospital, in my medical career as gastroenterologist, I have attended and made oral presentations in several conferences and I have published some papers related with Gastroenterology.
I am working as a volunteer in a Portuguese organization (Médicos do Mundo) since 2011, providing primary health care. This activity as volunteer became my first close contact with homelessness in Lisbon.
Post-graduation in Human Ecology in 2014 by the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences – New University of Lisbon.
At the moment I am a PhD student in Human Ecology in the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences – New University of Lisbon. My research focus on the life stories and daily experiences of women experiencing homelessness / housing exclusion in Lisbon District.
Human Ecology relies on an interdisciplinary view which is appropriate to study such a complex, heterogeneous, multidimensional and dynamic phenomenon as homelessness.
My interest in studying homeless women came from my experiences as a volunteer and from my own questions on the field. Since my first years of volunteer I recognized the importance of a gender perspective on homelessness.
